Bill Maher: Religious Pyromaniac and Anti-Christian Bigot Print E-mail

The stark errors and glaring omissions of Bill Maher's latest movie, Religulous, are plentiful. If you thought for a moment it would be a fair treatment of the issues Maher raises, you will be utterly frustrated through out the movie. Setting up straw men and then igniting them with his combustive, comedic fire, Maher makes toast out of his chosen prey.

The danger of this movie is in the way that it will be used by people intent on their rebellion against God. Using the pseudo-intellectualism of Maher, some might believe they have a great insurmountable intellectual bulwark behind which they can hide. The movie can also sway the young and gullible, (i.e. public school graduates).

Comedian Bill Maher, a former Catholic with a Jewish background, and host of Real Time with Bill Maher on HBO, takes up his usual role as a caustic, vulgar and irreverent critic of religion in general and of Christianity in particular. Maher's snide criticisms against the Bible and the Church are tired old charges, yet he handles them with a fresh sense of arrogance.

Masterfully editing his documentary to make himself look sincere and honest, and those who foolishly let themselves be interviewed look stupid or evil, Maher simply repeats may of the usual arguments and lies of atheism.

For example Maher drags out the lie that more people have died from wars of religion than another source. That is, of course, if you don't count the last century where secular-atheistic communist governments slaughtered well over 100 million people, often of their own citizenry. But that's an honest mistake, I'm sure.

Conspicuously absent from the movie are any of the leading intellectuals of the Christian church, unless you think the pastor of a church that meets in the back of an 18 wheeler in truck stop parking lots is the most formidable intellectual adversary Maher could find for Christianity.

Maher, like many skeptics and cynics, try to appear to be thoughtful and nuanced in their clever attempts to discredit the beliefs of others. Maher produced a film that gave the appearance that no one of the Christian faith has ever responded to his charges.

Yet, skeptics are rarely, if ever, challenged to defend their own irrational commitment to skepticism. Maher need only do a quick refresher course on the history of philosophy to be reminded that the attempt to find truth based on pure reason alone has been dashed repeatedly on the rocks of man's limited intellect, propensity to error and self-delusion.

In one scene, Maher rails against America because the overwhelming majority are religious, yet no one would want to live in the godless world that Maher and his skepticism would logically dictate. That's why it is called the former Soviet Union.

Those who believe that America was founded as a Christian nation are also ridiculed. According to the Declaration of Independence, the Founders believed in God-given rights and natural law, both of which only arise from a Christian worldview. There would be no America without Christianity.

If Maher is right and there is no God, then there are no transcendent truths or natural rights. Man's ideas are only the accidental and random firing of electrical charges in the brain based on evolutionary urges and biological determinism. There is no freedom, no meaning, no soul, no love, only a meaningless life and then annihilation. Man is reduced to a carbon-based protoplasm signifying nothing. And atheists wonder why people aren't jumping on board the SS Nihilism.

If there is no God, then neither is there right and wrong, only power. Those with power dictate to the powerless what they determine to be right and wrong. We have seen what murderous acts the godless perform once they have power to impose their will. If you think the world is bad with religion, look at what happens with out it!

Maher is a regular proponent of anti-Christian bigotry. Either he is a sincere victim of his own stubborn pride and an honest propagator of his enmity against God, or he is simply exploiting religion and Christianity to make a fabulous living. God knows his heart, but until he publicly repents, Maher has made himself a most influential enemy of the Gospel and CADC must expose him.
